Southern Tobago

Southern Tobago's beautiful palm-fringed beaches with clear calm waters are a popular spot to swim or take glass-bottomed boats out to nearby coral reefs. This is the most developed part of the island with the main concentration of hotels, restaurants and shops.

Northern Tobago

Northern Tobago is the place to get away from it all - much less developed than the south of the island with picturesque villages, cliff-backed sandy bays and rich coral reefs popular with divers. Little Tobago island, accessed by glass-bottomed boat from the mainland, is bird sanctuary popular with walkers and birders.

The highlight of the week was our day with Jason Radix. His knowledge, not only of birds, but of the history, politics and ecology of the island was superb. He was delightful company - our special thanks to him.

Hotels for 'Tobago Chill-out'

Days 1 - 3

Kariwak Village

Crown Point
rating

Average rating 4.9 (14 ratings)

In this individualistic hotel, Allan and Cynthia Clovis set out to create a holistic environment for guests’ mind, body and spirit. Clearly their clients feel the benefit as many return year after year. Even the Dalai Lama stayed here.

There are 24 tasteful ground level bedrooms. Children up to 12 yrs stay free (there is a charge for meals); cots can be provided.

Set in the compact well-tended grounds are a small swimming pool, freshwater ponds, thatched dinning room, jacuzzi and waterfall, amid tropical flowers, shrubs and trees. Set menus emphasise wholesome Caribbean cooking without additives.

The garden also holds a large thatched, open sided ajoupa where qualified instructors hold 3 classes a week in Hatha Yoga, Tai Qi, and Qi Gong. There are gentle stretching exercises 3 mornings a week. None require experience; all ages are welcome free of charge. Ayurvedic Marma therapy and Shiatsu massage can be booked at extra cost. The hotel is an active centre for local arts, entertainment, and self-improvement and therapeutic workshops.

Store Bay, the nearest beach, is an 8min walk away. Pigeon Point is an 8min drive away; a vehicle leaves for Pigeon Point each morning at 10am, returning at 4pm.

Hotels in the southern tip of Tobago, like the Kariwak, receive aircraft noise early in the morning (mostly propeller planes rather than jets). This doesn’t seem to inconvenience guests, and did not trouble us when we stayed there.

Half Moon Blue Hotel

Bacolet Bay

A characterful small hotel situated high above Bacolet Bay. Two units of ten rooms are separated by a horizonless swimming pool. The décor is charmingly eccentric. Rooms are spacious and furnished with four-poster king-size beds draped with netting. Jalousied windows and doors bring cool breezes, though the rooms also have a/c and overhead fans. It’s a 2 minute walk to the beach on the sandy crescent bay. Next door is ‘La Belle Creole’ restaurant set in a palm garden. Owner and former fashion model Gloria Jones-Knapp  has succeeded in combining Caribbean warmth with European flair. A lovely place for or honeymoon or just to chill out.
