Where to stay
Havana has a good selection of hotels, with plenty of characterful options at many levels of comfort and price. Outside of Havana, most towns and countryside areas you might most want to visit have a good hotel or two, but in a few places the options are just serviceable. Most of Cuba's beach hotels and resorts focus on package holidays to well-established formulas. Some are a reasonable choice for a few days at the end of a touring holiday. There is a small scattering of alternatives out of the mainstream. In general Cuban hotels do not achieve the standards expected of their equivalents in Europe, though some may come a lot closer than in the past.
Hotel grades
We use the following to indicate relative prices:
MID-RANGE A good standard option which we think is comfortable and pleasant but with few frills and at a priceto suit the cost-conscious traveller. Guest bedrooms all have private bathrooms, of course.
UPPER RANGE A notch or two up, with prices to match
TOP RANGE At the top end of what's available. A special place to stay, but at the top of the market pricewise. High prices do not always mean luxury facilities.
